Written and directed by Makoto Shinkai (Your Name, 5 Centimeters Per Second) it is yet another poignant story from the acclaimed anime artist that stands well above most other animated films of this era.
In Tokyo, young high school student Hodaka Morishima attempts to find work and a place to live after running away from home. At the time, Japan is going through severe rain, halting the progress of many important events. After finding work at a small publishing company, Hodaka is tasked with researching urban legends around the local area, interviewing people who may have knowledge of such a subject. Eventually, Hodaka meets a mysterious girl named Hina, who to his surprise, has the amazing ability to control the weather by simply closing her eyes and praying. Intrigued by her powers, Hodaka decides to befriend Hina to understand her better as a person.
Beautifully animated and touching, Weathering With You is guaranteed to provide just the right amount of entertainment for any fan of Makoto Shinkai's work. While it doesn't quite reach the level of cleverness as "Your Name" it still has enough originality to separate it from its predecessor and stand on its own without drawing too much comparison. The animation is simply gorgeous, easily on par with Studio Ghibli, perhaps even more so. The attention to detail on the raindrops and water is highly reminiscent of Shinkai's 2013 film "The Garden Of Words" another of his work that used rain as a plot device. The characters are likeable and well developed, particularly Hodaka and Hina. Every scene they were together I could always feel the growing friendship between the two. However, the one major gripe I had was that the story was highly predictable. By the time the third act has begun, it's very obvious how things are going to end. Aside from that, this anime film is certainly worth one's time. The version I watched was in Japanese with English subtitles, but I am interested in seeing a dubbed version when it is readily available.
I rate it 8/10.

Like many, Jean Seberg was naïve. She had no idea that as an American she might find herself at the center of an illegal plot that would be expected to be set in Soviet Russia or Mao’s China. For her support of what FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover considered a seditious organization — with donations to the Black Panthers and a Black Power salute for the cameras — he unleashed the full power of the Bureau to bug her homes, create lies and bitter gossipy rumors that would ultimately drive her to a breakdown and, eventually, suicide. “Seberg” is written by Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse and directed by Benedict Andrews (he recently helmed a hit London stage revival of “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” with Sienna Miller as Maggie and Jack O’Connell as Brick). The two FBI agents assigned to surveille and bug her homes offer high contrast: viciously bigoted Kowalski (Vince Vaughn) who wants to nail her as a Commie and impressionable Jack Solomon (O’Connell) who though married (to Margaret Qualley’s nervous housewife) becomes bewitched by his prey. The film’s use of the fictional Solomon as the sympathetic viewpoint for the audience is its big mistake. In a film about real life tragedy, he’s too conventionally drawn to seem anything more than a familiar plot device. It’s Stewart who sets the fires, a study of a complex woman’s unraveling registered with a coolly magnetic intensity. She makes “Seberg” soar.

It’s a potentially interesting subject to make a movie about. Unfortunately, “Seberg” takes a fictionalized, superficial approach to the story, seemingly more interested in how Seberg (played by Kristen Stewart) looked in a miniskirt than how she thought or felt about her situation. It’s not even clear what first draws Seberg to Black Panther Hakim Jamal (Anthony Mackie), when he causes a disturbance on a plane she’s flying on. But when they get off the plane, she’s making a “black power” salute alongside him for the cameras on the tarmac. Before long, she’s sending donations to Jamal’s community center, and going to bed with Jamal behind the back of his wife (Zazie Beetz). All this raises the ire of J. Edgar Hoover, whose FBI had a secret program called COINTELPRO that spied on and harassed black leaders and their supporters with the hopes of embarrassing them into silence. A big chunk of “Seberg” doesn’t feature Seberg at all, but follows a fictional FBI agent named Jack Solomon (Jack O’Connell) who is surveilling Seberg, and grows uneasy with the unsavory tactics pushed by his bigoted boss (Vince Vaughn). The prominence of Solomon’s storyline seems to be a tacit admission by director Benedict Andrews and screenwriters Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse that they can’t make an interesting movie solely about the facts of Seberg’s story. Andrews takes inspiration from the widescreen Technicolor films of the era in creating the look of “Seberg” — the lush, vibrant colors of Seberg’s world pop off the screen. But all the pretty surfaces can’t disguise the fact that the screenplay is pedestrian, with the characters blurting out their feelings without nuance or subtext. “I’m saying things they don’t want to hear, ” Seberg tells her husband (Yvan Attal). “I won’t stop. ” It’s like every thuddingly obvious line of the film was written for the trailer. Stewart delivers a typically strong performance, showing how Seberg descended into fear and paranoia under the FBI harassment campaign. But the rest of the movie doesn’t live up to the fierceness of her performance. I felt more of an emotional connection to Seberg’s tragic story reading her Wikipedia page. Daniel Foher’s documentary on the influential roots rock band that burned fast and bright in the 1970s is filtered through the memories of Robertson, the band’s guitarist and chief songwriter. Besides, at the end, it's all relative. You'd have to ask yourself: is this movie 1000 times worse than an 8 million movie? The answer is of course, no. Why does the pagal panti theme sound like welcome. I cried a river on this film. everyone should watch esp moms out there 😭😭😭. When the first trailer was released sonic was terrifying and everyone stated Jim Carrey was gonna carry the film Massive thank you to all those who listened to what US the fans asked for and now this could easily be the best film based on a game (with the exception of the original tomb raider & personally Mortal Kombat. YOU CANT ISEKAI WITHOUT THE ISEKAI TRUCK. It is sometimes hard to pinpoint where exactly films fail, the cinematography wasn't bad and you can definitely see that Kristen Stewart tried, but everything else about this film was below mediocre. Characters were one dimensional and lacked any depth, plot development, from the very moment the two main characters meet and then meet again, was abrupt and unbelievable. The other main characters - the good FBI agent vs. the bad one, were just as shallow. Not to mention the wives, whose role never went anywhere and might have as well not been in this film at all.
In the end, it simply wasn't interesting to watch and that is something no amount of blank long gazes and gratuitous nudity can fix.
If you haven't yet, do yourself a favor and watch 'The Lives of Others' a 2006 German film that shares a similar theme but actually does it justice.

Seberg breathless. I used to study this type of activism and I am quite familiar with this story and its character.
This movie was trying to prostrate as it was positively event when the real story was nothing what that movie was made out to be. There is a lot of stories in this movie that needs to addressing to. I'll leave a few examples in here:
First of off, this lady was never had a romance with this Civil Rights activist.
Secondly, the FBI was not harassing her all because of hers political, nor because of hers involvement with Civil Rights, except it was because of her being involvement with a racist black group that was attempting to rob a several business and motivate to kill the enforcement.
Lastly, this lady was arrested for treason, publicity destruction, hatred, and harassing the soldiers whose return from Vietnam.
This movie needs to re-fix with fact-checking, instead of doing it to supports the propaganda.
I'll give it a 10 star once they fix it, but I know they won't.

It was such nonsense that it spawned decades of better and better television to the point that fucking SHOWTIME is producing 18 brand new episodes 27 years later! Given the scowling irascibility of the title character, numbers like that should give the American animation industry pause about its own goody-goody underpinnings. To anyone who has sampled the popular American animated cinema of the last 25 years (and who hasn’t? ), the sensually shiny, awesomely lush and detailed computer-animated style of “Ne Zha” will be breathtakingly familiar. Written and directed by Jiaozi, the movie has the bouncing-off-the-walls kinetic spirit of something like “Kung Fu Panda, ” and the images themselves were clearly influenced by the mercurial, cosmic-weather-pattern style of “Frozen” (the film is full of crystal ice, blazing fire, and cascades of water, which come at you in a variety of swirling, churning geometric configurations). Yet U. audiences, especially, may take a while to get their bearings watching the story of a kid who was programmed by the spirit gods to be this wildly amoral and up to no good. Technically, Ne Zha is only two years old, but he looks about nine. He’s got bangs and a pair of pigtail knots, kohl-rimmed raccoon eyes, a red underworld insignia branded on his forehead, and a smile that lights up with enough prankish malevolence to make him look like a junior version of Joker. He’s also a touch androgynous (with a different wardrobe, he might be the devil as Pippi Longstocking), but essentially, as voiced first by Lü Yanting and then (as a teenager) by the actor known as Joseph, he’s a cocky martial-arts hellion, and the upshot of the movie is that it isn’t his fault that he’s that way. Based on a popular character out of Chinese mythology, Ne Zha was born to Lord Li (Chen Hao) and Lady Yin (Lü Qi), who lied by telling him that he was the reincarnation of the Spirit Pearl. In truth, his Demon Pearl foundation means that he’s fated to be killed by a lightning bolt when he reaches the age of three. His parents, without success, have tried to keep him locked away inside their sprawling domestic compound, so he’s really a victim ­— of destiny, and of the higher powers, who spend more than their share of screen time in “Ne Zha” pulling metaphysical puppet strings. The poignance of the movie is that Ne Zha has a Pinocchio side. Part of him would like to be an ordinary boy, even though he can scarcely play a round of Chinese Hackey Sack without smashing the footbag through a wall. Can he wriggle out of his fate? That’s the question on which the rather busy plot is hung, as Ne Zha gets tugged in different directions by an ambiguous host of spirit mentors, from the stammering Shen Gongbao (Yang Wei), who could be an early-’90s virtual-reality Dracula, to Ao Bing (Han Mo), who looks like a blue-haired version of Legolas from “The Lord of the Rings, ” even though he’s actually the reincarnated son of the Dragon King, who is out to liberate his clan from their underwater prison lair. Don’t worry if you can’t keep this stuff straight. As a movie, “Ne Zha” is most fun when it gets high on spectacle, literally chewing up the splendid scenery, as in an extended showdown between Ne Zha and the Sea Yaksha, a buffoonish water demon who takes the form of rushing rapids when he’s not his ugly green self: an ogre who swallows a young girl and then vomits her up, even as his saliva bubbles turn Ao Bing to stone, at which point Ne Zha grabs the now statufied spirit to use as a battering ram. With its generous outpourings of saliva, snot, and flatulence, “Ne Zha” is an earthier cartoon fantasy than we’re used to. Yet its head is often in the clouds. The movie is thick with a cosmology that can feel a bit arbitrary, to the point that it’s maddening when it keeps introducing new rules. Just when we think we’ve got it all figured out, we’ll be hit with a line like, “The Chaos Pearl has the ability to absorb the energy of heaven and earth. I didn’t expect that the Spirit Pearl and the Demon Pearl could combine to have this effect! ” (Cut to what looks like the electronic-cyclone-tearing-a-hole-in-the-sky climax of a hundred cheesy sci-fi thrillers. ) And guess what? We didn’t expect it either. That Ne Zha is beholden to a network of powers above and beyond himself could be seen, simply, as a testament to the stubborn persistence of gods and monsters in Chinese mythology. Yet maybe one reason the movie has struck such a populist chord is that it also expresses a quality intrinsic to the politics of China today: the degree to which people feel their fates entangled with forces of control that come from above. “Ne Zha” has something vital to teach the American animation industry — about the glories of letting the dark side rip — but it’s also clear that Chinese animators, working under more restrictions than we have, have absorbed a great many of the breakneck freedoms of American pop culture. Let’s hope it’s the beginning of a beautiful symbiosis. Wielu wydawców chce mieć w ciągu tego roku tłumaczenie polskiej książki – od razu zgłosiło się do mnie kilku. Wydawanie książek to biznes, a nie działalność charytatywna, więc trzeba zrozumieć, jak to wszystko działa. Jak? W Wielkiej Brytanii wydaje się sześć razy więcej książek niż w Polsce, w USA – 10 razy więcej. Ale z tego zaledwie 3-5 proc. to są tłumaczenia, głównie z francuskiego, niemieckiego, włoskiego i hiszpańskiego. Z byłych krajów zza żelaznej kurtyny (oprócz Rosji) Polska jest na pierwszym miejscu i zainteresowanie jej literaturą rośnie, ale to cały czas nie są duże liczby, w dobrym roku jakieś 10 pozycji. Sytuacja się polepsza, w dużej mierze dzięki pracy Instytutu Książki w ciągu ostatnich 15 lat. Książka musi być atrakcyjna dla konkretnego wydawcy na tyle, by w nią zainwestować jeszcze przed jej przeczytaniem. Bo tłumaczenie kosztuje – stawka standardowa w Anglii to 90 funtów za tysiąc słów, w Stanach – gdzie też tłumaczę – jest podobnie. Jak zainteresować wydawcę? Nie ma sensu przesyłać książki z dołączonym listem typu: „Całe życie na to czekaliście”. Bo zapewniam, że nie czekali. Wydawca to człowiek, który na biurku ma takie stosy książek, że nawet gdyby miał trzy życia, nie starczyłoby mu czasu. Dlatego najlepiej przygotować odpowiednie dossier. Wybitny tłumacz z rosyjskiego Michael Glenny, który pomagał mi zainteresować wydawców pierwszą książką, którą tłumaczyłam, czyli „Weiserem Dawidkiem” Pawła Huelle, nauczył mnie, jak napisać raport wydawniczy: streszczenie, ocena, informacje o autorze i fragmenty przekładu. Prowadzi też kompetentną stronę internetową z recenzjami i fragmentami książek po angielsku. Ale we własnym kraju tłumacz staje się ważnym orędownikiem książki u wydawców miejscowych. Gdy znajdę książkę, w której się zakochuję, muszę mieć przekonanie, że ma ona potencjalny rynek. Trzeba badać, kto co wydaje, poznawać preferencje wydawców. Np. Jill Schoolman z Archipelago Books z Nowego Jorku, która wydaje wspaniałą literaturę współczesną z całego świata, a z polskiej Wiesława Myśliwskiego i Magdalenę Tulli, szczególną uwagę zwraca na poetyckość stylu. Gdy „Gottland” już wyszedł, miał entuzjastyczne recenzje, w „New York Timesie”, i został wybrany przez Juliana Barnesa jako jego książka roku w brytyjskim dzienniku „The Guardian”. Co z polskiej literatury ma szansę na rynku anglojęzycznym? Czasem zgłaszają się do mnie polscy autorzy popularnych komercyjnych książek – trudno mi wytłumaczyć im, że nie mają szansy na brytyjskim rynku. A nie mają, bo wydawca od razu pyta, po co płacić za tłumaczenie, skoro u siebie ma w bród takich książek. Dlaczego sama tak lubię czytać angielskie przekłady obcych autorów? Bo właściwie zawsze są bardzo wysokiej jakości – zdały bardzo trudny egzamin, o którym mówimy: ktoś je wybrał spośród tysięcy innych, ktoś – tłumacz, agent – w nią uwierzył na tyle, że zadał sobie trud promowania ich, a ktoś inny postanowił w nią zainwestować, zamówić przekład i wydać. Brytyjczycy i Amerykanie, choć statystycznie najczęściej sięgają po literaturę łatwą, często jakoś związaną z tym, co widzieli w telewizji czy w kinie, czytają dużo naprawdę różnych rzeczy. Po obu stronach oceanu wciąż popularny jest Ryszard Kapuściński, dobrze się sprzedają książki Jacka Hugo-Badera, Wojciecha Jagielskiego, Anny Bikont, Magdaleny Tulli, Wiesława Myśliwskiego i Olgi Tokarczuk (w tym roku ukaże się przekład „Biegunów”). Absolutnie najpopularniejsze teraz są „Mapy” Aleksandry i Daniela Mizielińskich, można tu je znaleźć w dziale dziecięcym w każdej księgarni, zaraz szykuje się nowe wydanie z dodatkowymi mapami – to największy sukces Polski za granicą. Popularny jest Zygmunt Miłoszewski, który miał dobrą promocję – dzięki obecności Polski jako gościa honorowego w 2016 r. na Book Expo America. Miał świetne spotkanie w Chicago, wraz z trzema pisarkami amerykańskimi. Ale zaczęło się od wydawnictwa brytyjskiego, które publikuje tylko kryminały zagranicznych autorów i miało pomysł, żeby czytelnik, który na lotnisku kupuje przewodnik po kraju, do którego jedzie, miał też do rozważenia kryminał, który się tam rozgrywa – tak, by mógł podróżować po mieście śladami miejsc z książki. Dali mi stos zgromadzonych podczas targów książek, z których według mnie „Uwikłanie” było sto razy lepsze niż reszta. Ale wszystko trwało dość długo, bo wydawca czekał na przekład niemiecki, chciał przeczytać to w całości. A wtedy już chcieli od razu drugą część przygód Szackiego. Instytut Książki uważa, że wielu polskich autorów było dotychczas niedocenianych i teraz chce, by dostali szansę na międzynarodową karierę. Najpierw ktoś musi dowieść, że te książki mają potencjalnych czytelników i że jest na nie rynek. Jeśli ktoś w nie wierzy, powinien przetłumaczyć po kilkadziesiąt stron i zacząć pukać do drzwi kolejnych wydawców. Drogi na skróty tu nie ma. Siła programu Copyright Poland, który od lat prowadzi IK, i który dofinansowuje tłumaczenia na języki obce, polega na tym, że o wsparcie aplikują tu sami zagraniczni wydawcy, którzy już kupili prawa do polskiej książki. Myślę, że miałaby szansę tu zaistnieć, powiedzmy, gen. Augusta „Nila” Fieldorfa, może Ryszarda Kuklińskiego albo Jerzego Popiełuszki, bo ich historie są nie tylko ciekawe, ale naprawdę sensacyjne. Ale Brytyjczycy chyba i tak woleliby je poznać w kinie. Z drugiej strony jest już przełożone np. „Tajne państwo” Jana Karskiego, sama przetłumaczyłam „Kapuściński non-fiction” Artura Domosławskiego, przy czym autor na tyle miał świadomość zagranicznego rynku, że na potrzeby tłumaczeń okroił książkę o jedną piątą, wyrzucając z niej wątki ciekawe tylko dla polskiego czytelnika. Przełożyłam też „W ogrodzie pamięci” Joanny Olczak-Ronikier. To ważna i świetnie napisana książka, która dobrze wyjaśnia stosunki między inteligencją polską i żydowską od czasów przed pierwszą wojną światową do końca drugiej. Ostatnio wydawnictwo New York Review Books wydało na nowo „Pamiętnik z powstania warszawskiego” Mirona Białoszewskiego w tłumaczeniu Madeline Levine, ja w tej samej serii przełożyłam dla nich „Na nieludzkiej ziemi” Józefa Czapskiego. Ale choć pewien sukces odniosła książka Witolda Szabłowskiego o Turcji, to myślę, że będzie mi trudno przekonać anglojęzycznych wydawców do jego „Sprawiedliwych zdrajców”. Poza Polską mało kto słyszał cokolwiek o Wołyniu. W ogóle trudniej jest sprzedawać książki o tragediach. Często widzę ten mechanizm: ludzie czytają rzecz np. o Zagładzie, przyznają, że robi na nich wrażenie, ale przy następnej mówią: „Już znam ten problem, nie chcę już o tym czytać”. To prawda, że dieta czytelnicza musi być urozmaicona. Czasem jednak do jakiegoś tematu autor potrafi podejść wyjątkowo oryginalnie. Taka wydała mi się książka „1945. Wojna i pokój” Magdaleny Grzebałkowskiej. Zgadzam się. Ale to jest ten przypadek, gdy słyszę: „Mamy już coś na ten temat”. Akurat podobną książkę napisała Szwedka Elisabeth Åsbrink („1947: When Now Begins”) i już ktoś to kupił... W USA wyszła książka Wojciecha Jagielskiego o Ugandzie „Nocni wędrowcy”. Zaproponowałam ją angielskiemu redaktorowi, o którym wiem, że lubi takie literackie reportaże, ale odparł, że właśnie rok temu wydali książkę o Ugandzie. Jej autor, Matthew Green, zresztą napisał recenzję z Jagielskiego. „To jest najlepsza książka o Ugandzie” – przyznał, choć mówił o konkurencji. Co Polska mogłaby zrobić, żeby nasze książki cieszyły się większym zainteresowaniem za granicą? Instytut Książki powinien działać tak jak do tej pory. Dobrze byłoby bardziej inwestować w utalentowanych tłumaczy. Trzeba ich sobie wychować – i to nie tylko dobrych warsztatowo, ale też rozumiejących praktyczną stronę tego biznesu. Nigdy nie będzie wielu tłumaczy literatury pięknej z polskiego, bo to zajęcie tylko dla urodzonych lingwistów, więc nie ma sensu stawiać na masowość, np. przez naukę polskiego w szkołach brytyjskich. Za to na uniwersytetach – tak, na tym poziomie warto inwestować. Takich ludzi jak Stanley Bill, który w Cambridge właśnie rozkręca studia polskie, a przy okazji tłumaczy jeszcze Jacka Dukaja i w ogóle jest wielkim orędownikiem Polski, warto wspierać. Bo on nie tylko uczy studentów polskiego. Co roku organizuje dla nich konkurs tłumaczeniowy – należę do jury i jestem pod wrażeniem. Jeśli polskim władzom zależy na przyszłości waszej literatury za granicą, powinny inwestować w szkolenie studentów tam i na innych uniwersytetach zajmujących się studiami polskimi. Świetne wyniki ma też program dla tłumaczy organizowany przez Writers’ Centre Norwich. W jego ramach IP w Londynie corocznie dofinansowuje opiekę merytoryczną dla zdolnego tłumacza. Młodych tłumaczy wspierałam od lat, ale dzięki takiemu oficjalnemu programowi mam możliwość robienia tego bardziej systemowo: sugeruję, jak wybrnąć z kłopotów translatorskich i mocno im pomagam w sprawach praktycznych: dzielę się kontaktami, uczę przygotować atrakcyjne materiały dla wydawców itd. Podobny program dla tłumaczy z polskiego istnieje w Stanach, prowadzi go American Literary Translators Association, a dofinansowuje Instytut Kultury Polskiej w Nowym Jorku. Już zaczęła się druga edycja, mentorem tego programu jest Bill Johnston. A jak to się stało, że pani sama zaczęła tłumaczyć polską literaturę? Jestem prawie totalnym samoukiem, czasem żartuję, że wpadłam do stawu, a jak mnie wyłowili, ni stąd, ni zowąd mówiłam w tym dziwnym języku. Na początku lat 80. studiowałam rusycystykę w Oksfordzie, nie było tam osobnego kierunku polonistycznego. Jako studentka pod koniec stanu wojennego przyjechałam także do Polski. Odwiedzałam wtedy we Wrocławiu znajomych, których dwa lata wcześniej poznałam w Berlinie, gdzie pojechali pracować. Ich ojciec pochodził z Kresów, w czasie wojny działał w AK i oni dużo tłumaczyli mi, co się właśnie dzieje w Polsce, co to wszystko znaczy, dlaczego sami trafili na krótko do więzienia za to, że walczyli z milicjantami na ulicy. Ja wtedy nie umiałam po polsku ani słowa, w Polsce było ponuro, ale czułam się szczęściarą, bo właśnie mnie olśniło, że to jest to, czego szukam. Chwilę wcześniej skończyłam studia i wtedy poczułam, że choć oni wszyscy z tej Polski najchętniej by się wynieśli, ja mam tu jakąś misję, że brak wolności słowa jest czymś tak strasznym, że ja też powinnam się jakoś włączyć do walki z komuną, tym bardziej, że mieszkając na Zachodzie, byłam jakoś tam uprzywilejowana. Po powrocie do Anglii próbowałam zostać na uniwersytecie, żeby zająć się polskim i mnie przyjęto, ale nie dostałam stypendium, więc musiałam znaleźć pracę. Wzięłam kilka lekcji polskiego, ale dalej uczyłam się już sama. Kupiłam wszystkie książki przetłumaczone z polskiego na angielski, jakie tylko mogłam znaleźć i porównywałam z polskim tekstem. Pierwszą książką, jaką przeczytałam po polsku, był „Popiół i diament” Andrzejewskiego. Oczywiście niezbyt dużo rozumiałam z tej swoistej powojennej wojny domowej i tego, kim naprawdę byli komuniści. A po wszystkim nie byłam pewna, czy w Polsce można mówić do kogoś per „wy”, więc podczas następnego pobytu w Polsce mówiłam trochę dziwacznie i, jak się okazało, niepoprawnie politycznie. W latach 80. dostałam w Londynie pracę u Leopolda Łabędzia, polskiego politologa, który w czasie wojny walczył w armii Andersa, a po wojnie angażował się we wspieranie pisarzy zza żelaznej kurtyny. Był też redaktorem politologicznego pisma „Survey” poświęconego krajom komunistycznym. Pracowałam tam jako asystentka, ale potem dostałam do przetłumaczenia kilka tekstów. Tam poznałam też Jana Chodakowskiego, który w wydawnictwie Puls wydawał polskie książki przemycane z Warszawy. Z nim pojechałam w 1988 r. na festiwal kultury polskiej w Glasgow. Pracowałam już wtedy jako redaktor pisma „Brytania” wydawanego przez rząd, by popularyzować kulturę brytyjską w Polsce. Donald Pirie z uniwersytetu w Glasgow zaprosił wtedy kilku Polaków, Antoniego Liberę, Bronisława Maja i Pawła Huelle. Z Chodakowskim mieliśmy wtedy pomysł, by wydawać wartościową literaturę z Europy Wschodniej, chcieliśmy zacząć od „Weisera Dawidka”. Michael Glenny, słynny tłumacz literatury rosyjskiej, pomógł mi przygotować tłumaczenia fragmentów. Bloomsbury Publishing, dziś znane przede wszystkim z odkrycia J. K. Rowling, zaproponowało mi wtedy przetłumaczenie całości, ale się bałam. „Spróbuj, cholera, zacznij być bardziej pewna siebie” – zachęcali koledzy. No i w końcu to zrobiłam. W przeciwieństwie do większości tłumaczy, którzy zwykle mają etaty na uczelniach, ja jestem wolnym strzelcem. Ponieważ w latach 90. pracowałam w Europejskim Banku Odbudowy i Rozwoju, udało mi się kupić mieszkanie i dziś mogę spokojnie pracować jako tłumaczka, zarabiając ćwierć tego, co wtedy.
