At AMC Loews Boston Common and suburban theaters. Grade: B As a biopic, “Seberg” is buoyed by Kristen Stewart’s fantastic performance as doomed ’60s movie star Jean Seberg and its narrow focus. Instead of charting the expansive if short life — she died at 40 — of the Marshalltown, Iowa, native who found overnight teenage celebrity and global mockery simultaneously, “Seberg” analyzes not her many Hollywood and European movies or broken marriages and affairs but her destruction at the hands of the FBI. Like many, Jean Seberg was naïve. She had no idea that as an American she might find herself at the center of an illegal plot that would be expected to be set in Soviet Russia or Mao’s China. For her support of what FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover considered a seditious organization — with donations to the Black Panthers and a Black Power salute for the cameras — he unleashed the full power of the Bureau to bug her homes, create lies and bitter gossipy rumors that would ultimately drive her to a breakdown and, eventually, suicide. “Seberg” is written by Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse and directed by Benedict Andrews (he recently helmed a hit London stage revival of “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” with Sienna Miller as Maggie and Jack O’Connell as Brick). Andrews uses a large cast and splendid, Oscar-worthy costuming and production design to tell this sordid story. It begins with a recreation of Seberg’s infamous 1957 film debut, burning at the stake as Joan of Arc in Otto Preminger’s “Saint Joan. ” The newcomer was left scarred physically and psychically. A decade later, Seberg rules as a French New Wave icon based in Paris who has come to LA to see about a Hollywood picture and a much-needed comeback. She befriends Panther activist Hakim Jamal (Anthony Mackie) on the flight over and poses with the Panthers on the tarmac. That is the photo op that sets off Hoover. The two FBI agents assigned to surveille and bug her homes offer high contrast: viciously bigoted Kowalski (Vince Vaughn) who wants to nail her as a Commie and impressionable Jack Solomon (O’Connell) who though married (to Margaret Qualley’s nervous housewife) becomes bewitched by his prey. The film’s use of the fictional Solomon as the sympathetic viewpoint for the audience is its big mistake. In a film about real life tragedy, he’s too conventionally drawn to seem anything more than a familiar plot device. It’s Stewart who sets the fires, a study of a complex woman’s unraveling registered with a coolly magnetic intensity. She makes “Seberg” soar.

Cinephiles will forever remember Jean Seberg as the darling of the French New Wave for her role as the American with the blond pageboy haircut who bewitched Jean-Claude Belmondo in Jean-Luc Godard’s 1960 “Breathless. ” But “Seberg” instead focuses on a different, more tragic slice of Seberg’s life. A decade after “Breathless, ” she was a middling Hollywood actress who came under fire from the FBI for her work supporting counterculture organizations, including the Black Panthers. It’s a potentially interesting subject to make a movie about. Unfortunately, “Seberg” takes a fictionalized, superficial approach to the story, seemingly more interested in how Seberg (played by Kristen Stewart) looked in a miniskirt than how she thought or felt about her situation. It’s not even clear what first draws Seberg to Black Panther Hakim Jamal (Anthony Mackie), when he causes a disturbance on a plane she’s flying on. But when they get off the plane, she’s making a “black power” salute alongside him for the cameras on the tarmac. Before long, she’s sending donations to Jamal’s community center, and going to bed with Jamal behind the back of his wife (Zazie Beetz). All this raises the ire of J. Edgar Hoover, whose FBI had a secret program called COINTELPRO that spied on and harassed black leaders and their supporters with the hopes of embarrassing them into silence. A big chunk of “Seberg” doesn’t feature Seberg at all, but follows a fictional FBI agent named Jack Solomon (Jack O’Connell) who is surveilling Seberg, and grows uneasy with the unsavory tactics pushed by his bigoted boss (Vince Vaughn). The prominence of Solomon’s storyline seems to be a tacit admission by director Benedict Andrews and screenwriters Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse that they can’t make an interesting movie solely about the facts of Seberg’s story. Andrews takes inspiration from the widescreen Technicolor films of the era in creating the look of “Seberg” — the lush, vibrant colors of Seberg’s world pop off the screen. But all the pretty surfaces can’t disguise the fact that the screenplay is pedestrian, with the characters blurting out their feelings without nuance or subtext. “I’m saying things they don’t want to hear, ” Seberg tells her husband (Yvan Attal). “I won’t stop. ” It’s like every thuddingly obvious line of the film was written for the trailer. Stewart delivers a typically strong performance, showing how Seberg descended into fear and paranoia under the FBI harassment campaign. But the rest of the movie doesn’t live up to the fierceness of her performance. I felt more of an emotional connection to Seberg’s tragic story reading her Wikipedia page. Daniel Foher’s documentary on the influential roots rock band that burned fast and bright in the 1970s is filtered through the memories of Robertson, the band’s guitarist and chief songwriter. A lot of kids dream of running away to join the circus. For Nate Begle, it took 30 years, but it happened. Although it was a very particular kind of circus. I’ll bet when my dogs fall asleep, and their legs start twitching, they’re dreaming of being a dog like Buck. When you consider that this movie was created for just 8000 budget, and the only extra crew was the two director brothers' mom, you can only see this film as a masterpiece of what's possible. Creating a film of that quality is almost impossible for that budget, I guarantee you that (Primer was shot for 7500, but that was back in 2003, we had major inflation since then. comes to 10.5k. Besides, at the end, it's all relative. You'd have to ask yourself: is this movie 1000 times worse than an 8 million movie? The answer is of course, no. In fact, it's very possible that this movie is better than MOST 8 million budget movies! You should watch this movie even out of curiosity of what's possible on such a budget! It's a true study for all narrative filmmakers and film geeks.

Why does the pagal panti theme sound like welcome. I cried a river on this film. everyone should watch esp moms out there 😭😭😭. When the first trailer was released sonic was terrifying and everyone stated Jim Carrey was gonna carry the film Massive thank you to all those who listened to what US the fans asked for and now this could easily be the best film based on a game (with the exception of the original tomb raider & personally Mortal Kombat. YOU CANT ISEKAI WITHOUT THE ISEKAI TRUCK. It is sometimes hard to pinpoint where exactly films fail, the cinematography wasn't bad and you can definitely see that Kristen Stewart tried, but everything else about this film was below mediocre. Characters were one dimensional and lacked any depth, plot development, from the very moment the two main characters meet and then meet again, was abrupt and unbelievable. The other main characters - the good FBI agent vs. the bad one, were just as shallow. Not to mention the wives, whose role never went anywhere and might have as well not been in this film at all.
In the end, it simply wasn't interesting to watch and that is something no amount of blank long gazes and gratuitous nudity can fix.
If you haven't yet, do yourself a favor and watch 'The Lives of Others' a 2006 German film that shares a similar theme but actually does it justice.
Seberg breathless. I used to study this type of activism and I am quite familiar with this story and its character.
This movie was trying to prostrate as it was positively event when the real story was nothing what that movie was made out to be. There is a lot of stories in this movie that needs to addressing to. I'll leave a few examples in here:
First of off, this lady was never had a romance with this Civil Rights activist.
Secondly, the FBI was not harassing her all because of hers political, nor because of hers involvement with Civil Rights, except it was because of her being involvement with a racist black group that was attempting to rob a several business and motivate to kill the enforcement.
Lastly, this lady was arrested for treason, publicity destruction, hatred, and harassing the soldiers whose return from Vietnam.
This movie needs to re-fix with fact-checking, instead of doing it to supports the propaganda.
I'll give it a 10 star once they fix it, but I know they won't.
