Mason nails lol. Anobody knows who controls the media and gov knows why they were so specific, unnecessarily. This was on my birthday. I'm so intrigued. Seeing this for sure. "Rent a cop, Richard Jewell, did his job well, perhaps too well for his own good. The hero of the 1996 Olympic park bombing, Jewell was at first lionized then slandered and vilified by what in this day and age has become the usual suspects, The FBI and media. Directed by Clint Eastwood, it is a somber but chilling telling of when respected goes rogue that is having the same disturbing effect today as the same apparatus sets its sights on someone higher than a security guard.
Eastwood's sometime lethargic direction remains controlled and unsensationalized throughout as his protagonist lummox (movingly played by Paul Walter Hauser) is picked at by easily corrupted FBI agent Tom Shaw (Jon Hamm) and a sleazy reporter Kathy Scruggs (Olivia Wilde) willing to go the extra mile for a scoop. Impeding the runaway justice Jewell's lawyer Watson Bryant (Sam Rockwell) corrects the sloppy ambitions without grandstanding, tempering his rage at institutions in railroading mode while maintaining a balancing act dynamic of Lenny and George from Of Mice and Men with Jewell.
Outside of the moments from the bombing attack, Richard Jewell is mostly a drawing room drama filmed in banal, lugubrious settings with the occasional flock of abrasive reporters. The story commands attention however, especially in these "interesting times" where media has completely ignored its bedrock pledge to objectivity, shamelessly taking sides while rogue agents at the FBI are getting pink slips. Microcosm of today? Or just maybe the way it always has been and will be. Average film but a timely thought provoker.
If the reporter's source was never discovered nor her methods used, then how can we entirely rule out that she exchanged sex for information with the FBI agent. First things first. I'm a mad Rich fan, especially when it comes to his old tracks and his long sets. To say that he's near the top of my list of DJs to see live is an understatement. I had to wait 16 years to see him for the first time at Trance Unity last year, but since then I had tickets for 8 of his shows across the US and Canada. 3 of which have been a no show due to plane issues both on his and my side, including his second ever OTC in Chicago: With my addiction to the Lord of Light, it was no surprise that I jumped on the occasion to see him do an open to close boat cruise in my second favorite Canadian city, Toronto! Sry chaps, Montreal is still the better place to enjoy life:P Add in an afterparty and we were all strapped in for an unforgettable experience. SECTION 1 - Balearic Boat Cruise Crowd I felt I needed to start with this as the Toronto crowd is unlike anything else in North America. Sure, Rich plays there at least twice a year and many people have his plethora of Pure Trance tees, but just saying that doesn't do justice to the special connection between the entire crowd and Rich. There was excitement in the air when people were queueing to board the boat, when we were all waiting for Rich to show up, when he started taking pictures with fans, and of course when that first beat dropped. With every passing minute, that level of excitement kept on building up. It's something that's very difficult to put into words and it needs to be experienced to fully understand it. The look in people's eyes, the hands in the air, Rich being an all around treat with everyone, the sunset, the Toronto skyline by day and night. Some of these moments were captured in my videos and I hope they manage to give you guys a small glimpse of this truly once in a lifetime event. Toronto trance fans are not only great party people, but they're also deeply knowledgeable about trance and it's history. From the lyrics to the melodies of 15-20 year old classics, there's nothing that they don't know. When you combine all these factors together, you end up with 4 hours of Pure Unbounded Joy and a constant smile on your face. Venue Not really a venue, but the boat had a lot of character. Due to it's nature, there's no DJ booth. This meant that everyone was close to Rich (as you'll see in my videos, I was 2ft away from him most of the time. This proximity also added a lot to the show I find. Instead of a big stage, you felt more at a private party, with the DJ being a good friend of yours and having a great time alongside you. I don't know how many speakers were on the boat, however we had two right by the mixing setup. The sound was OK given this was a boat, out in the open water and a slight breeze. It could never compare to the power of a club system, however the balance was very good. Set I've thought long and hard for the best way to describe this set and I'm yet to come up with a way that fully does it justice. Someone more literary adept than me would be better qualified but then they might not have had the same experience as me (especially given for how long I've followed this music and how much I know about it's history. Instead, I'll just go by an hourly format and give my impressions on the highlights of the set. Hour 1 The opening hour was a mix of his opening stint from his Melbourne & Toronto OTCs combined with some of the latest progression selections from Pure Trance Radio. As my IDing specialty doesn't revolve around prog house, I missed a few tracks that hopefully some of you here might recognise. Track of the hour for me was Robert Vadney - Magic (Balearic mix. Robert is known a lot more for his underground and experimental productions, but this piece of music is some of the best I've heard in a long time. The initial riff is very simple and deep. The main melody is very melancholic and the bassline is quite subdued, yet the two combine for a magnificent groove. The sounds used also had a very analog feel to them (especially the clap and the high hat) and it really made the track stand out for me. Hour 2 Technically Eric Prydz - Generate (Orkidea remix) was played in the first hour, but I picked this track as the inflection point between the prog house intro and what I call the Balearic hour. This for me was the best portion of the whole cruise, for multiple reasons: The sun started to go down and the sky was slowly getting an orange tint. It looked very Ibiza-ish and the Toronto skyline is beautiful even from afar This hour featured the most classics, and what classics did it feature: Greece 2000, Solarcoaster, and Zocalo! I've stopped making track requests at events a longtime ago but I wished I had asked in advance if Rich could play Chicane - Autumn Tactics (The Thrillseekers remix. That would have been the missing piece that would have made this hour beyond epic. Nevertheless, between the Ibiza Anthem, my favorite Solarstone track, and one of the best prog trance tracks of all time, I'm really nit picking. People did a bit of socialising, drinking, and eating during the first hour. By now, there was an innate level of "Lets get this party going" and Eric Prydz - Generate (Orkidea remix) was the spark that fueled the fire. Yet again, our Finnish samurai delivers the goods! The cruise was advertised as Balearic and I felt this segment hit the nail in the head I still can't decide which track was my favorite for this segment, so many jewels were played! Hour 3 Hour three dipped deeper into progressive before the PURE VIBES were unleashed! Hearing Pet Shop Boys - Inner Sanctum and Age Of Love - Age Of Love was without a question not only the highlight of the night for me, but it also ranks right up there with me hearing Paul Van Dyk - For An Angel (E-Werk club mix. my all time favorite track for the first time played by the man himself. I've been a huge fan of Pet Shop Boys since about 1994 when I first listen to their track West End Girls. I've continued to listened to them throughout the years and Inner Sanctum just hits all the right spots for me. Also, hearing for the first time the track that gave birth to this music genre that we all call trance was extra special. On top of that, this track was played right as the last signs of light vanished behind the horizon. I doubt Rich planned to time it this way but for me everything just felt right. This also marked the point from which my phone was completely useless in terms of providing an interesting picture to look at in the videos:D With the night creeping in, the club beats made their way to the speakers. For the rest of the hour, we were treated to plenty of Solarstone tracks and remixes. Hour 4 Hour four picked up where hour three ended: Pure Trance. The 4Ever Le Onde mashup was premiered at Dreamstate and while I loved hearing it there, I enjoyed it a lot more this time around. When the Ludovico piano started playing, virtually everyone went quiet. Nobody was dancing. Nobody was doing anything actually. Everyone was just listening to the brilliance of Einaudi. You knew you were surrounded by people yet very few dare to break to silence and ruin the moment. And just to make it extra special, Rich followed up with Neba! This man truly has no limits to his awesomeness! Pure NRG - Secret Of The Sahara was another standout track, just like any Pure NRG track is tbh. The track of the hour though MUST go to Solarstone - Seven Cities (Ambient dub mix. I've been saying this a few times in this review already, but yet again it just felt right! The track that put Solar Stone (Yes, back in 1999 the group was called Solar Stone. It changed to Solarstone when Rich was the only member left) on the map is the perfect track to end such a journey, especially when it's in Ambient form. Summary Even though this set was 3 hour shorter than his OTC from September, this was the better set. The theme, the crowd, the ambiance, the setting, the classics, the new material. It all combined for what I can safely say was the best set I've attended. Never in the 4 hours had I felt that one of the 39 tracks that were played was not needed or out of place. The mixing was flawless and there was a natural progression to the musical journey. It's something that some of you present here will live to regret not attending, even if you you might have had a very legitimate reason for doing so (not giving away names:P) Tracklist. Think again my friend because this Solarstone fanboy ain't stopping until the last beat is dropped! P Although it seems that /u/ Gav is an even bigger fan than me! So, after a quick supper, it was time to drive to NEST and get all ready for part two. Tim Penner did a great job at warming up the crowd for 2+ hours before we ended the night with two full hours of Pure Trance club style! Crowd I'd say a large percentage of the people at the afterparty were also on the boat, so it was a great vibe! With Rich sticking mainly to his productions and remixes, people were once again singing all the lyrics:D. It was also understandable that some in the crowd didn't have the same level of energy as others given that this set had a 2-4AM timeslot. Overall, the crowd was still great just not at the same level as the boat cruise. Venue This was my first time at NEST. I've always found it cool that Toronto has a good number of clubs and theatres that can host trance events, all depending on the type of booking aimed by the promoter. It adds one more variable into the mix and I felt this venue was much better suited than Fly 2. 0 for this set. Initially I found the sound a bit too loud but listening back to the videos it didn't seem as bad as live. The highs especially were fantastic, many sound systems get this part wrong and all you can hear is a either a screech or muddy sounds. Given the vocal driven nature of the set, having bad highs would have totally ruined it for me. I think the lows could have used a touch more umph but you can't have a Funktion-1 everyone I guess:P Set This was pretty much your regular Solarstone pres. Pure Trance club set. Nevertheless, there were some notable surprises, especially Now & Forever, Diamond (Adam Ellis remix) and Sincere (Andre Visior remix. I was also extremely happy that Eric Prydz - Opus (Pure NRG remix) was omitted from the set and instead was replaced by Scarlet and Era. With Secret Of The Sahara being played on the boat, this made for quite a bit of Pure NRG material and that's is always a great thing. There were also a few new tracks, with all three most likely being Solarstone originals. Also, with 64 tracks played out at two different shows, I'm convinced some DJs would have gone the easy way out and replay some of the same tracks at the afterparty. Best example I can think of is Vini Vici spinning the same tracks in the same order at the Dreamstate SF afterparty as his main set. I was very happy and I must give Rich credit for not once replaying the same track. Yes, Lost Hearts was also featured in the afterparty, but it was the Mark Sherry remix so for me that's not a replay. Tracklist. Conclusion Given the length of this review, I'll try and keep this extremely short: This was a show you had to be at to fully grasp it, especially the boat cruise part. No matter how long I'll go on writing on about it or how many videos I post won't do enough to replicate those 4 hours of magic. Even though I had attended the JOOF show the night before back home, I not once regretted the 5 hour drive to and from Toronto for this show. In fact, I'll do it again in a heartbeat. And that speaks volume for the quality of the night. Extras So, since I still have interesting content to share, I decided to make you read on for a little longer:P With the show ending at 4AM, some of use decided to stick around for some pics/talk with Rich outside the club. By the few of us, I mean the core members of the Toronto nutters that I call my trance buddies. About 5 minutes after we got out, Rich walks out in his jeans and a drenched undershirt looking completely exhausted. Exhausted might actually be an understatement, he was literally dead! I believe he had not slept since he had left the UK that morning. That's 24+ hours of being awake, plus a 5 hour time change. Oh, and 6 hours of DJing to boot. Nevertheless, he still took a few minutes to talk with us. It's in moments like these that you realise just how humble he really is and how passionate he is about sharing moments like these with his fans. /u/scrubbingbbl had already split before Rich came out cause he thinks he's too cool to hang out with us. Well, it seems he also had the last laugh as a few minutes after Rich left us, the two met at a convenience store where Rich wanted to buy some milk at 4:15AM! D On Sunday, Oz and the crew organised a BBQ for Rich and about 30 people showed up. When I say that there's a special connection between the people of Toronto and Solarstone, I genuinely mean it. It's rare that you'd see an artist, regardless of his field of work, elect to spend a day out in a park, eating, drinking, and socialising with his fans after a day as tiring as the one before. Unfortunately I couldn't stay for this as I had to prep this review and get all set up for my travels but this is what makes Solarstone not just an amazing musician, but also one of the nicest and best persons in the entire industry. Of course, the Austrian governments instability has prevented them from throwing in their all, and our Prime Minister has no interest in a snowy mountain in a land hes quite eager to forget all about. This is where I enter. Would you like a glass? ” Frances kneaded her knuckles together. I dont think…” “No need to be modest, Fran, ” Dr. Farnsworth said. “Lord Perryman, Dr. Gambon would like a whiskey, as would I. ” Frances accepted the glass from Gheorghe wordlessly. The first sip was a balm on her anxious throat. “Thank you, Lord Perryman. Dr. ” She swallowed. “Were all- that is, the archaeological community and Cambridge in particular- were all quite grateful for your willingness to fund an expedition like this, Lord Perryman. And your willingness to assemble such a team…” Lord Perryman waved at the air. “Its nothing, its nothing at all! If the Austrians have no interest in stepping in, I certainly shall. Of course, I have my own motives. My reputation is well-worn. ” He took a deep sniff of his glass and smacked his lips. “The Langeklaue site is rumoured to be nearly untouched since the days of the Silk Road, and once you academics have your day, I daresay that my new wing needs decorating. ” Frances held back a grimace. Farnsworth had repeated the message often enough, but it never was pleasant to be reminded of the financial realities of her field. The truth was, it was very difficult to pursue research without private investment, and it was very difficult to pursue private investment without allowing them the centrepiece for their next dinner party. “Never mind that, ” Lord Perryman said. “I keep dallying away from my purpose. A team of elite archaeologists has been sent to excavate the Langeklaue Ruin Site, which houses an ancient Silk Road trading post built on top of a Roman military outpost built on top of a Pagan temple. This game will run on combined day/night phases. This means that players must submit actions and lynch votes every day. Lynch kills will resolve before night (action) kills. If your target is lynched, you will not be given a backup. Each phase will run for approximately 24 hours. Phases will close at 10:00:00 PM EDT (UTC -4:00. Votes and actions are due before this time. Full roles will be revealed after players die. We will provide the names of the 3 players with the most votes in the lynch and how many votes they received. However, her favourite artefacts to unearth are the ones which force her and her colleagues out of their comfort zone in order to disentangle their meaning. Twice in the game, she will choose two players. If they are both affiliated with The Dig, their role abilities will be permanently swapped with each other. (V) A) L) Archaeologists Camilla Everleigh The Ideologue Dr. Everleigh's most praised and most condemned attribute is that she refuses to stay silent. If everyone believes an artefact dates to Republican Rome but she's positive it comes from the Regal period, she will badger her colleagues until they accept her view. A warm and kind man, hes always willing to provide a leg up to those who need it. If Frances is killed, he can choose another archaeologist to bestow her power upon. If he chooses poorly, though, itll mean his demise. (V) A) L) Archaeologists Frances Gambon The Scholar Frances is staffing her very first dig, fewer than three weeks removed from defending her dissertation. What she lacks in experience, she more than makes up for in mental acuity and hard work. Three times in the game, she will be able to choose another player and copy their role for a single use. (V) A) L) Archaeologists Giovanni Gervasio The Brownnoser Giovanni is a polarizing figure in the archaeological community; he's noted for asking tons of questions, annoying professors, and always winding up with unforeseen information. Three times in a game, he will choose a person. He will then see everyone who voted for them in that day's lynch vote. (NV) A) L) Archaeologists Cyril Higginbotham The Retiree Cyril has been on digs for most of his 78 years, and despite the creep of his arthritis, nobody has managed to drag him away from the field. He's made his name by surviving where others have failed. If he is still alive when 50% of the players have been killed, his lynch vote will be doubled for the rest of the game. (NV) P) L) Archaeologists Otto Huber The Warden Otto is the dean of Austrian archaeologists, spearheading dig teams in his country since young hotshots like Frances and Sophia were in swaddlings. He's a stern, bald man who knows how to get the most out of his charges' particular talents, whether they like it or not. Three times per game, he can replicate the action of his first target onto his second target and double their efforts. (V) A) L) Archaeologists Magdalena Kostrova The Savant Hailing from rural Slovakia, Miroslava and Magdalena are both specially talented and sensitive only together. They complement each other's skills uniquely and grow sullen when alone. Every night, Magdalena will choose a target. This target will be the recipient of Miroslava's action, should she choose to give her sister the tools. (V) A) D) Archaeologists Miroslava Kostrova The Prodigy Hailing from rural Slovakia, Miroslava and Magdalena are both specially talented and sensitive only together. Miroslava will choose whether to attack, role block, or protect. She can only choose each one once per game, and she will not know who her sister decides to target each night. (NV) A) L) Archaeologists Octavia Lu The Sinologist It's a lonely road for a historical Chinese architecture expert at an English university, but Dr. Lu makes do. She gets herself invited to continental European digs (the ones Cambridge is willing to fund) and in her eternal enthusiasm, manages to convince others to let her do their jobs for them. Three times in the game, Octavia will choose a target. She will perform that target's action that night instead of them, and will gain the benefits and consequences in their stead. (V) A) L) Archaeologists Sophia Lutz The Up-And-Comer Dr. Lutz is a rising name in the archaeological world, using her sharply written papers and incisive lectures to gain access to digs all around her Geneva home. The money earned from her expeditions helps to finance her secret opium habit. Three times in the game, she will have the chance to indulge in her drugs. Because she is so insistent on keeping it secret, however, she will murder everyone who visits her those nights to preserve it. (NV) A) L) Archaeologists Paul Meyer The Overseer Dr. Meyer is Dr. Huber's partner in crime, an efficiency maven and scientific bulldog who makes it his duty to know the doings of every single person on the dig. Each night, he can choose a player. He will then see the last three players who they voted for in the lynch. (NV) A) D) Archaeologists Dolores Schwarzfeld The Wife Dolores is a charming presenter and a dedicated researcher, equally comfortable at both the secretly naughty conferences of Cambridge and the humid archives down below. She loves neither, however, as much as she loves her husband Morris. If Morris is attacked at night, she will die protecting take down his attacker. (NV) P) L) Archaeologists Morris Schwarzfeld The Husband Morris may love his wife Dolores, but he loves his scandalous underground games of poker more. If his wife found out, though, he'd be toast. Each night, he will "bet" on another player. Their action will only have a 50/50 shot of success. However, if he bets on Dolores, he loses his protection along with his marriage. (NV) A) D) Archaeologists Algernon Snidely The Sweet-Talker Before making the leap to Cambridge, Algernon was a noted Shakespearean child actor. His gift of gab is so profound that he's found himself included on many groundbreaking digs despite still being an untested undergraduate. Twice in the game, he can use his gift of gab to ensure the town's top two lynch targets both die. His alphabetization skills are top-notch, yet his work ethic is lacking. Three times over the course of the game, when he visits a strange player, he is able to deduce which letter their role's surname begins with. (V) A) L) Readers Gladys Fox The Spiritualist Gladys is a perfectly capable (and, dare she say, highly competent) archaeologist, yet her chief acumen lies in her close personal connection to the spiritual world. Once per phase, she will submit the name of another player and learn their class. (V) A) D) Readers Captain John Gladwell The Pilot Capt. Gladwell fought bravely for the RAF in the Great War, and studied diligently at Cambridge, but the horrors of No Mans Land keep him awake at night. If he chooses to spy on a player, he will see all those who visited that will receive the same consequences as the player would have. (V) A) D) Readers Alyosha Medvedev The Haruspex Alyosha was born in three-family, one-room shack in the freezing depths of Yakutsk. There he learned three things: how to make a hearty borscht, how to make an ushanka, and how to divine a person's affiliation by reading their intestines. Twice per game Alyosha can unravel a dead player's intestines like so many nesting dolls to discover the affiliation hidden within. (NV) A) L) Readers Murphy O'Connor The Sentinel Murphy is far more comfortable at night than under the baking sun of the day. His moonlit strolls of Langeklaue allow him to look at the site and interpret it in a different way than others. Once in the game, he can visit a target. He will see which roles visited them, rather than players. (V) A) L) Readers Evelyn Shaw The Romantic Evelyn is one part archaeologist, one part seductress, hopping from tent to tent the second dusk hits. Her aim: convince her fellows to abandon their love of modern surrealist dreck in favour of the sweet songs of Byron and Shelley. Every night she chooses someone to persuade and over the course of this conversation, she learns who (if anyone) they submitted an action on the prior night. (V) A) D) Readers Herbert van Helsing The Historian Herbert is extremely well read, both on the history of the Langeklaue Ruin Site and the proper way to appreciate German chocolate. Alas, because his nose is in his books so often, he often forgets to look up and smell the roses. He can investigate a player and see whether they are loyal to The Dig. Unfortunately, when he learns that a player is not affiliated with The Dig, he is so dedicated to further research that he can only make a maximum of three comments in the main subreddit for one whole phase. (V) A) D) Readers Johanna van Helsing The Erudite Johanna is the most talented, and most loved, of Herbert's nine nieces. He has taught her the history of Langeklaue, but as she is still an undergraduate student, she hasn't accumulated his depth of knowledge. When Herbert dies, she will inherit his role. Unfortunately, she will only get a result 50% of the time. (V) A) L) At least one of the readers not named Johanna van Helsing will always receive false results for their investigations. There will be no pattern for the results or forewarning that the results are false. (NV) A) L) Protectors Brienne Garfield The Watchdog Sir and Dame Garfield may not have let young Brienne play in the mud, but when she got accepted to Cambridge her studies couldn't tear her away from the rugby pitch. More than her physical strength, though, Brienne is known for her loyalty to her archaeological mentors. As long as Brienne is alive, Richard M. Farnsworth cannot be lynched. (NV) P) D) Protectors Lieutenant Roland Kingery The Guardsman Lieutenant Kingery knows his way around a rifle, thanks to his service in the Great War, but his true strength comes in reading the room and stopping trouble before it starts. Each day, he can choose one individual. All of the lynch votes cast for them the next phase will be voided. (V) A) D) Protectors Lady Helen Mortimer The Naturalist Lady Mortimer educated herself in the massive garden surrounding her family's estate, testing the potency of various herbs on less than eager volunteers until she settled on just the right medicinal mix. Every night, shell give her herbal blend to a player, which is so foul smelling that it prevents any action from being done to them. It will also prevent them from carrying through any action for the entire day, thanks to its numbing powers. (V) A) D) Protectors Dr. Edelweiss Müller The Scientist Dr. Edelweiss Müller trained at the University of Berlin and has become a fast favourite of Germanys rising political elite for her willingness to push the boundaries of conventional medicine. Because of her nerve, she can go farther than your average doctor. She can choose one person per night and protect them against all attacks. Erna Müller The Medic Like her twin sister Edelweiss, she trained at University of Berlin. Unlike Edelweiss, she is a by-the-book, no nonsense medical specialist with zero tolerance for bending the lines of the Hippocratic Oath. Shes not as effective as her sister, but she is a talent. Her targets, if they are attacked, will have their deaths delayed by one phase. Esther Müller The Theorist Dr. Esther Müller is lesser known than both of her sisters, having never truly mastered the knack of careerism. She also has yet to master the knack of keeping her nerve, as despite her prodigious skill, the sight of blood makes her faint. Each night, she will protect her target from all night attacks. However, due to her nausea, she can only comment a maximum of three times the phase after successfully saving someone from death. (V) A) D) Protectors Father Nicolas LaPaglia The Priest Father LaPaglia knows little about archaeology, but he knows much about with the amount of devout Catholics on the trip, he finds that a spot of prayer (and a nice mug of hot cocoa) never gets wasted. Once per game, he can bless a player and protect them from all night attacks. (V) A) L) Protectors Gheorghe Popescu The Bodyguard Gheorghe has been hired by Lord Reginald Perryman III as his personal guard. Strong, silent and descended from good Carpathian stock, a mere glance from him can freeze intruders. As long as Gheorghe is alive, nobody can visit Lord Perryman at night. (NV) P) D) Protectors Neville Robbins The Shaman Neville knows that the supernatural exists, and he's frankly tired of trying to prove himself to his colleagues, none of whom save Gladys believe him. Instead of working for popular support, he reaches into his imperfect texts and attempts to deal with the clearly spiritual activity himself. Three times in the game, he will choose a target. If he chooses a non-Spirit, nothing happens. If he chooses a spirit, they have a 50% chance of dying. (V) A) L) Protectors Marcus Schmidt The Mountaineer Marcus knows the treacherous alpine passes more than anyone else, and while his mountaineering ethics technically prevent him from leading people astray, hes been known to have an accident or two. Three times in the game, hes able to point another player in the wrong direction and watch them fall off the side of the mountain. Unfortunately, if they share the same team as him, his next attempt at pointing another player astray has a 50% chance of success and a 50% chance of Marcus losing his footing and plummeting to his death. (V) A) L) Despite all three of Edelweiss, Erna and Esther having medical degrees, one of them is secretly a quack. All of their protections will fail without forewarning. The Civilians Class Name Title Mission Civilians Maria Bonneville The Collector Maria's sprawling Provençal mansion has a collection of curios second only to Lord Perryman III's in Europe. Whereas Lord Perryman adores the opulence of history, Maria prefers to dabble in the old traces of the occult. Maria has three jewels: Emerald of Evanescence, Onyx of Obscurity, and Ambiguous Amethyst. She can smash each jewel once, releasing the magic within, but no more than one per night. Each jewel contains a different form of magic and Maria won't know which jewel corresponds to which result. (NV) A) L) Civilians Gerhard Holtz The Postman Very few Austrian postmen are willing to brave the trek to the Langeklaue Ruin Site in order to deliver packages and letters from home. Gerhard is one of them. However, due to his privileged position, he is able to control the flow of information. Each phase, he will designate one player whose messages he is willing to deliver. The next phase, that player will write a 75 character private message to deliver to any other player in the game. (V) A) D) Civilians Mary-Alice Hughes The Journalist Tough and tenacious, Mary-Alice knows that there's something suspicious at Langeklaue. She uses her charm to uncover more than anyone would expect from someone her age. Every three phases, she will learn how many are loyal to The Dig. (NV) P) L) Civilians Katja Kraus The Hermit Katja is not an archaeologist, nor is she a financier, but moved to the Alps years before to escape the German economic crisis post-Versailles and live off the land. She will duplicate the loyalty of the first person to visit her in the game. If the visitor is Marcus, she will not die, but will duplicate his ability as well. (NV) P) L) Civilians Francesco Marino The Recordskeeper Francesco is meticulous, punctual, and a master of efficiency. He is the one who has access to the basket inside which the lynch votes are contained. Each phase, he will get a list of who voted for the phase's victim. (NV) P) D) Civilians Lord Reginald Perryman III The Financier Lord Perryman: mining baron by day, curio enthusiast by night. He commissions archaeological digs the world over in hopes that hell unearth a new item for his personal collection at his manor in Cheshire, which he proudly states rivals the British Museums. Because he is financing the dig, all lynch votes cast for him will be discarded. (NV) P) D) Civilians Reginald Perryman IV The Heir Reggie, as his friends call him, is Lord Perrymans oldest son. He lacks his fathers business acumen and love of antiques, but shares his passion for thick moustaches and brandy. If his father dies before a predetermined point in time, he will inherit his ability. If his father doesnt die, he will choose a new destiny. NV) P) L) Civilians Edgar Pence The Accountant Edgar doesn't necessarily love his job, but someone needs to take care of the dreary duty of allocating the paycheques and it may as well be him. For a spot of mischief, once per phase, he can withhold someone's paycheque. They will then be prevented from performing their action. (V) A) D) Civilians Gottfried Probst The Postman's Apprentice Gottfried has been apprenticing under Gerhard for 6 months now. While he's eager to make the trek to the Langeklaue Ruin Site, he's not quite as adept at relaying messages as Gerhard. The next phase, that player will write a 25 character private message to deliver to any other player in the game. (V) A) D) The Crew Class Name Title Mission Crew Elsie Bottomley The Canadian Elsie just loves life! She has no special skills in any way (except in the way that everyone's special) but gosh darn it does she have enthusiasm! She has very special skill of voting for the lynch victim every day, just like everyone else. (NV) P) N/A) Crew Ernesto Buono The Coachman Ernesto may not have grown up dreaming of being a coachman (his goal was a calcio superstar) but he does his job with pride. He's a very meticulous worker who has full control over who enters into which caravan, and he exercises the right to change troublesome arrangements if need be. Each night, he will swap two players. If player A is swapped for player B, ALL actions done to player B will happen to player A and vice versa. (V) A) D) Crew Lenora Clemont The Amateur Lenora is an amateur mountaineer with cat-like agility who usually becomes a fast favourite among digs for her refreshing lack of pretention. Because of her social charm, she can be essential at worming her way into the discourse. Every night, she can choose one person whose lynch votes received will be wiped clean for that phase. (V) A) D) Crew Niklas Eriksson The Cook The Langeklaue Ruin Site is too rugged for fine china, but Niklas knows that his roast venison tastes just as scrumptious on rounded planks of wood. If he is attacked at night, he'll offer his visitor a board of his latest culinary creation. They have a 50% chance of being so satisfied that they will turn around and return without attacking. (NV) P) D) Crew Arthur Kissinger The Hunter Arthur Kissinger is a carnivore to the bone. He takes immense pride in tracking down what he believes to be the true source of nutrition for the camp, unlike that narcissistic simperer Ivy: small fowl and larger game. If Ivy dies before he does, his lynch vote will be doubled. (NV) P) L) Crew Ethel Kopp The Attendant Ethel is beloved around the central European digs for her wide smile, bright skirts, and prompt delivery of water to the thirsty diggers. The archaeologists at the site know that her services are integral to the success of the dig and their own safety. Twice per game, choose someone and if they submitted an action, guarantee that it succeeds even when it wouldn't have otherwise. (V) A) L) Crew Hugo Lapointe The Misfit Hugo is just about the only person unable to find love in his hometown of Paris, France. While some have come to the Dig for adventure, some for work, and some for sport, Hugo has come to this secluded Alpine camp to find love. At the beginning of the game he will choose another player to woo. If the chosen player dies, Hugo will die with them. (NV) A) L) Crew Ivy Lowry The Gatherer Ivy Lowry is an omnivore to the root. She takes immense pride in tracking down what she believes to be the true source of nutrition for the camp, unlike that arrogant simpleton Arthur: root vegetables and local mushrooms. If Arthur dies before she does, her lynch vote will be doubled. NV) P) L) Crew Marlene O'Donoghue The Laundress A ruin site is no place for stiff ironed shirts and fine skirts, yet Marlene has somehow acquired that dreary the ruin site lacks sufficient access to her favourite gin. At the end of a long day, she's so grumpy that she'll fight anyone who crosses her path. If she attacked in the night, no matter by whom, she will take them down with her. (NV) P) L) Crew Janusz Orlowski The Vegan Vegans are good at finding other vegans, and Janusz is no exception. While there aren't terribly many who share his dietary proclivities in his native Poland, he has far more luck on his multinational archaeological digs that draw from the rest of Europe. Two times in a game, he will submit a name, and will find someone who shares the same affiliation as that person. (V) A) L) Crew Gizella Racz The Skeptic Gizella hasn't become a dig regular in her native Hungary by mere chance. No, despite not having the formal training of many of the archaeologists, she's noted for asking the tough questions and determining whether the latest lifechanging artefact is a forgery or not. Once in the game, she will choose one player. She will find out whether or not they're a fraud. (V) A) L) Crew Abram Rosenberger The Groundskeeper Abram has been keeping the grounds for Lord Perryman and his family for over three decades. He's had to clean up after the Lord's hunting parties, garden parties, croquet parties, and the odd golf party. In the process, he's learned a thing or two about footprints. Once during the game, he can choose a tent, and will learn how many people came and left from the tent that night. (NV) A) L) Crew Hans Schwarz The Lumberjack Hans chops wood. This is what his grandfather raised his father to do, and this is what his father raised him to do. He stokes fires with the passion of a much younger man, but is equally adept at putting them out. Once per game, he can "put out the fire" and prevent someone from performing their action. (V) A) L) Crew Gonzalo Vidal The Bootlegger Gonzalo isn't technically a member of the crew, but his ability to carry a dozen bottles of scotch up a mountain without breaking any makes him among the dig's favourites. That said, because he is an outsider, he naturally looks suspicious to those in charge. Whenever he is investigated by one who can determine affiliation, he will always show up as against The Dig. (NV) P) D) Crew Rupert Wade The Survivalist Rupert has no use for the fancy tents and wooden cabins that frequently make up archaeological digs. Just give him a few planks of wood, two sticks for fire, a length of rope and dig him a hole and he'll be satisfied. Because of his survival skills, Rupert is unable to be killed at night. (NV) P) D) Crew Joel Wilhelm The Musician When you're stressed after a long day at the dig, Carnegie Hall jazz virtuoso Joel Wilhelm is here to take out his piano and sing a little song for the weary masses. However, some days his skills are more transcendent than others. Once in the game, he's able to play a song so stellar, so pure, that the entire crew at Langeklaue will relax and share their secrets. One of the fun parts of Werewolves is that players get the chance to record their thoughts on the game as it is ongoing. Each player will have access to the diary form and all diary entries will be released at the end of the game, so yanno, dont be a dick. Ghosts and Spectators We will be allowing spectators to follow the game from r/HogwartsGhosts if theyre unable to play. Only living players are allowed to comment on the game threads in r/HogwartsWerewolvesA, which means that neither ghosts nor spectators are allowed to do so. Failure to comply will result in you being banned from commenting in the sub. Behavior and Role Play Werewolves is a game of lying, deceit, manipulation, and broken hearts. There will be disputes. There will be arguments. There will be tough questions. There will be people calling you a liar. There will be people accusing you of things you did not do. Many of these things will rely on circumstantial, or hilariously thin, evidence. As facilitators, we will be enforcing the established rules of the game, but we will not be stepping in on any of these interpersonal disputes, within reason. The best way to tell someone that you dont like their attitude is with a lynch vote. If things get too out of hand, we ask that the players be the change they wish to see in the game and try to de-escalate conflict themselves. How are allegations considered news? This is what the 24 hour news cycle reduced the media to. They spread rumors and innuendo. I guess the media hasn't learned. They still do these smear campaigns. He leaves the firm to be a security guard at Piedmont College, hoping to work in law enforcement, but is fired after multiple complaints of acting beyond his jurisdiction. Jewell moves in with his mother Bobi in Atlanta. In the summer of 1996, he works as a security guard at the Olympic Games, monitoring Centennial Park. In the early morning of July 27, 1996, after chasing off drunken revelers during a Jack Mack and the Heart Attack concert, Jewell notices a suspicious package beneath a bench, which an explosives expert confirms contains a bomb. The security team, including police officers, FBI agent Tom Shaw, and Jewells friend Dave Dutchess, are moving concert attendees away from the bomb when it detonates, and Jewell is initially heralded as a hero. At Atlanta's FBI office, Shaw and his team determine that Jewell, as a white, male, wanna-be" police officer, fits the common profile of perpetrators committing similar crimes, comparing him to others who sought glory and attention by rescuing people from a dangerous situation they caused themselves. Shaw is approached by journalist Kathy Scruggs of the Atlanta-Journal Constitution. In exchange for sex, Shaw reveals that Jewell is under FBI suspicion. The Constitution publishes Scruggs' story on the front page, disclosing the FBI's interest in Jewell as a possible suspect. Scruggs makes particular note of Jewell's physique, the fact he lives with his mother, and work history to reassure herself that he fits the FBIs profile. The story quickly becomes international news. Jewell, initially unaware of his changing public perception, is lured to the FBI office. He initially cooperates but refuses to sign an acknowledgement he has been read his Miranda Rights, and instead phones Watson Bryant for legal representation. Bryant, now running his own struggling law firm, agrees and makes Jewell aware he is a prime suspect. Shaw and partner Sam Bennet visit the dean of Piedmont College, who reinforces their suspicion of Jewell. The FBI searches Jewell's home and seize property including true crime books and a cache of firearms. Jewell admits to Bryant that he has been evading income taxes for years and was once arrested for exceeding his authority. Bryant scolds Jewell for being too collegial with the police officers investigating him. Jewell admits his ingrained respect for authority makes it difficult for him not to be deferential, even when the authorities are trying to do him harm. Jewell and Bryant confront Scruggs, demanding a retraction and apology, but she stands by her reporting. Still not completely convinced of Jewell's innocence, Bryant and his long-suffering secretary Nadya time the distance between the phone booth and bomb site, concluding it is impossible for someone to phone in the bomb threat and discover the bomb at the time it was found. Scruggs and Shaw have made the same conclusion, and the FBI changes their picture of the crime to include an accomplice. As their case weakens, the FBI try to link Dutchess to Jewell as a possible homosexual accomplice. Bryant arranges a polygraph examination which Jewell passes, removing Bryant's doubt about his innocence. Bobi holds a press conference and pleas for the investigation to cease so she and her son may get on with their lives. Jewell and Bryant meet with Shaw and Bennet at the FBI office, and after some irrelevant questions, Jewell realizes they have no shred of evidence against him. When he asks pointedly if they are ready to charge him, their silence convinces him to leave, finally having lost his sense of awe for law enforcement officers. Eighty-eight days after being named "a person of interest" Jewell is informed by formal letter that he is no longer under investigation. In April 2005, Jewell, now a police officer in Luthersville, Georgia, is visited by Bryant who tells him that Eric Rudolph has confessed to the Centennial Olympic Park bombing. An epilogue states that two years later, on August 29, 2007, Jewell passed away at the age of 44 of complications from diabetes and heart failure. As expected, TNN officially announced this week that ECW's show is being cancelled, with the final episode scheduled to air in September. ECW and USA Network have had talks in the past week but no deal has been reached and its unknown if USA intends to even keep airing wrestling at all. As far as FOX goes, word is FOX is looking to have more of a show aimed at young people (kids and teenagers) and ECW by no means fits that mold. Word is FOX is mostly interested in doing something with WCW or with Hulk Hogan independently. In their press release announcing the cancellation of ECW, TNN said, ECW has failed to meet some of the criteria of the agreement, including ratings performance targets. We appreciate the efforts ECW and Paul Heyman have made to bring wrestling fans to TNN. When the deal first started, TNN had publicly been expecting ECW to draw ratings in the 2. 0 range and sold advertising presuming that number. ECW never really came close to the 2. 0 mark but they were still the highest rated show every Friday night on TNN. There's been a lot of back-and-forth bitterness between ECW and TNN during their relationship and especially now that ECW has been cancelled. Heyman has long complained about TNN failing to give ECW any significant promotion but in hindsight, it seems like they didn't bother promoting ECW because they knew all along that they were pursuing WWF. It's interesting because the deal ECW had with TNN stipulated that they could only cancel the show based on poor ratings if the number averaged 0. 6 or below over the course of a month. ECW ratings never fell that low for even one week, much less for a month, so legally, they shouldn't really be able to claim they are cancelling it due to ratings. With WWF's recent signing of NCAA heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar, it leads Dave to go on a looooooooooong story about the history of other decorated amateur wrestlers going pro. Lesnar is the 3rd NCAA champion currently under contract to WWF (the other 2 being Kurt Angle and developmental wrestler Sylvester Terkey. Dave says Lesnar was probably the most highly-recruited athlete to go into pro wrestling since Ken Shamrock several years ago (like Lesnar, Shamrock also turned down offers from WCW and NJPW to go to WWF. There's been 16 NCAA champions to make the jump and most of them have been successful. 5 of them were HOF-level stars (Earl McCready, Leroy McGuirk, Verne Gagne, Danny Hodge and Jack Brisco) and several others were major stars or had long careers, and after only one year, Kurt Angle has established himself as a big time star also. Only 4 of the 16 can be considered flops who washed out of the business. And those are only the champions. There's a lot more who excelled at amateur wrestling despite never winning an NCAA title, such as Gorilla Monsoon, Steve Williams, Dan Severn, Bob Backlund, etc. From here, Dave basically writes a big paragraph or two for every single one of these guys, telling their history in the business. It's interesting stuff, but it's pretty much just Wikipedia for amateur-turned-pro wrestlers. He notes that Kurt Angle initially turned down a WWF offer back in 1996 but eventually decided to give it a shot and excelled at it beyond anyone's expectations. Dave thinks that, barring an injury, Angle is almost certain to become one of the biggest stars in the business in the next 5 years (yup. Lesnar has the look and the physical athletic skills, but whether he can put it together in the ring and get over as a personality is the big question. The E! network aired a one hour True Hollywood Story episode on Jesse Ventura that heavily focused on his wrestling career. Ventura came off great on the show and it featured interviews with Vince McMahon, Jimmy Snuka, Billy Graham, and others. Dave especially likes the fact that Adrian Adonis was finally given his due for his part in Ventura's success, because most biographies of him (including Ventura's own book) always downplay that part. The only part that Dave really takes issue with is that it spun the story of why Ventura fell out with McMahon, attributing it to Ventura trying to start a union. That happened in 1986 but Ventura stayed with the company until 1990 and left due to dispute over a video game deal Ventura had gotten for himself. McMahon once again confirmed that Hulk Hogan was the one who snitched Ventura out to him, which is also what McMahon testified to during the lawsuit with Ventura. For his part, Hogan still denies that he was the one who ratted out Ventura. The show ended with Ventura saying he wants to have a match against McMahon after he leaves office, which McMahon seemed open to. Genichiro Tenryu made a surprise return to AJPW and will be working the upcoming tour. It's especially interesting because it was thought Tenryu would never return to AJPW. He left the company back in 1990 to head up his own promotion, Super World of Sports, and when he left, he took several AJPW stars with him. Until his death, Giant Baba never forgave him for the betrayal. Many have said that if Baba were still alive, he never would have brought him back, no matter how desperate AJPW's situation is. But Motoko Baba apparently felt differently and, well, AJPW needs all the help they can get right now. So she made the deal and Tenryu has returned to AJPW, along with hell freezing over. Speaking of, AJPW and NJPW officials met this week to discuss a possible inter-promotional deal but nothing was agreed to. NJPW expected AJPW to be more desperate than they were, but AJPW wants to have everything booked equally and evenly, but NJPW wasn't going for that. Considering AJPW only has one or two name stars left, NJPW felt they don't have the depth to be booked evenly with all of NJPW's stars. Kawada is the only real top star AJPW has, and if they go out of business, he'd almost certainly end up in NJPW anyway, so they aren't in any hurry to help prop up the company. It's also going to be interesting to see if this pans out because Giant Baba legitimately hated Antonio Inoki for decades, so it shows how desperate Mrs. Baba is right now to keep her company afloat. Pride is said to be interested in bringing in Steve Williams and Bart Gunn to do some MMA fights. Dave thinks this is a bad idea and that both men would get slaughtered (Williams ended up doing one fight in 2004 for K-1, he got destroyed. Bart Gunn had 2 fights, both in 2006. He won the first one on a fluke technicality and lost the second by decision. Just before the start of the latest AJPW tour, Johnny Ace informed the company that he won't be coming back and has taken a backstage job with WCW. Ace has been with AJPW since 1988, who only hired him because he was Road Warrior Animal's brother. But in the years since, Ace went on to become a bigger long-term star in Japan than his brother and played a big role in behind-the-scenes stuff for the company, helping to book foreign stars and things like that. Word is he's been ready to get out of AJPW for awhile because the physical style was taking a toll on his body. About a year ago, he had a tryout with WWF but they weren't interested. Most of the foreigners were said to be leaning towards staying in AJPW but with Johnny Ace, who was the closest to Mrs. Baba, leaving the company, it has a lot of them second-guessing. During an interview this week, Steve Williams claimed that Vader would be joining Misawa's new promotion. Jumbo Tsuruta's gravestone is a 6'4 tall circular headstone listing his career history and featuring a photo of him wearing the AWA title. Scott Norton's arm, Saito's broken collarbone, Kenzo Suzuki with a back injury and Katsuyori Shibata and Don Frye with neck injuries. Tenryu worked a match against female wrestler Shinobu Kandori and it was a stiff worked-shoot style match, with Tenryu beating the shit out of her. Even in a worked environment in a match she agreed to, Dave is really uncomfortable seeing a woman getting the hell beaten out of her like that. Atsushi Onita is claiming again that he's retiring this year. Naoya Ogawa officially vacated the NWA title this week so he can focus on training for an MMA fight against Rickson Gracie next year. He was originally supposed to drop it to Gary Steele, but he has an arm injury right now and instead of waiting for him to heal, they decided to just have him vacate it "due to injury" and do a tournament later to crown a new champion. Dave saw a Discovery Channel show about Ultimate Pro Wrestling School in California. The highlight of the show was a guy named John Cena (Dave spells it "Sena" here) who has the look of a young Sting and does a gimmick called The Prototype. Dave says he has tremendous delivery in his promos. "Until you see him wrestle in the ring, he looks like a can't miss. Watching him wrestle, you see that he needs a lot of work, but if he gets that down, he has a shot at being a genuine star. Cena has a bodybuilder physique and they showed him stocking up on groceries for the week, buying 40 pounds of meat, 35 pounds of chicken, seven dozen eggs and several gallons of milk. Overall, Dave thinks the documentary was good because it showed how hard the road is to making it as a top star. He said the show features a lot of people you'll probably never hear from again and one or two people that may be big stars in 5 years. WATCH: UPW - Inside Pro Wrestling Shawn Michaels must be almost as good a teacher as he is a wrestler. Dave has seen a few episodes of Michaels' TWA promotion that airs locally in San Antonio and says it's the best indie show around, due to the great in-ring wrestling and compares it to 80s-era Stampede. The top star is a guy named Spanky who is fun and has a lot of charisma but he's small (that'd be THE Brian Kendrick. Another guy there is American Dragon, who is a little larger than Spanky and has a lot of potential (and of course, that'd be Daniel Bryan. He does a lot of high flying moves, but hits them like a pro. Dave thinks he tries to do too much in every match but for as new as he is, he's a great worker. The other one who impressed Dave is a bigger guy named Lance Cade, who reminds him of a young Barry Windham, but not nearly as good yet. Random ECW notes: Psicosis is expected to debut at the PPV. Bobby Eaton is also expected to debut soon. At the upcoming ECW Arena show, they're planning to have a going-away party for Raven since he's heading to WWF. Speaking of the ECW Arena, there's a lot of concern that this could be the last show there, but ECW has another one booked for August, if they last that long. A guy named Red Dog debuted (that'd be Rodney Mack. Vic Grimes' WWF developmental contract wasn't renewed because they felt like he hasn't improved enough. He's still technically with ECW but since money is tight right now, they aren't flying him in to shows (he lives in California. At a Kansas City house show, RVD debuted a new move where he did a springboard dropkick from one corner of the ring to the other, into a chair in his opponent's face. He also did it at the house show the next night and is expected to debut it on the PPV against Scotty Anton. Nearly everyone who saw it said it was one of the most amazing spots they've ever seen in professional wrestling (that'd be the Van Terminator, which Shane McMahon later stole as his finisher. Vince Russo is expected to be back this week and, speaking of, the upcoming Bash at the Beach PPV is expected to be headlined by Hogan vs. Jarrett but rumor is there's problems with the finish. Take it with a grain of salt, of course, because the story involves Hogan, Bischoff, and Russo and anything they say or do always has to be considered a possible angle. The plan is for Jarrett to win but Hogan, who has creative control in his contract, is balking at putting over Jarrett. Hogan was supposed to be on Nitro this week to shoot an angle to build to the match but due to arguments over the planned PPV finish, Hogan refused to come to Nitro. Again, Dave says you can never be sure if this is an angle given the people involved. Notes from Nitro: Johnny The Bull was injured during his hardcore match with Terry Funk, with Bull doing a springboard legdrop outside the ring and it's believed he may have suffered a broken pelvis. He immediately told Funk to pin him to end the match, but Funk wasn't supposed to win and he felt this match was getting Johnny over (the crowd was really into it) so instead of pinning him, Funk kept it going for another minute or so despite Johnny being in obvious pain. After the match backstage he was throwing up and had blood in his urine. Dave says people backstage had warned Johnny not to do the move earlier in the day. He ended up having to be carried backstage after the match (turns out the injury was a lot more horrifying. Pelvis was messed up but he also busted his bladder and tore his urethra. And that's enough internet for me today. Jeff Jarrett brought out a bunch of fat women to sing the for the end of Hogan's career, and it was one of the worst segments on Nitro in months, and that covers a lot of ground. To make it even worse, they did this at 9pm, right as Raw was starting, because WCW. It ended with a fake standards & practices guy coming out and Jarrett laying him out with a guitar shot. The guy doing the angle was an actor but he used the real S&P guy's name and it turns out they asked the real S&P guy to do it, but he refused. "You know things are bad when guys who have never even been on TV are refusing to do your angles. Dave says. He also thinks it's hilarious that WCW keeps blaming S&P for their failure to write good television, meanwhile WWF is dealing with the PTC going after advertisers, toned their show down, and still manages to put out a good product most weeks (and in fact, Smackdown ratings went up after they started toning down the content. Yet WCW (particularly Russo) continues to whine about S&P being the reason WCW can't dig themselves out of their hole. Pretty much everything else also sucked. WATCH: Johnny The Bull gets injured Backstage at last week's Thunder tapings, Scott Steiner reportedly threw a fit when asked to put over Mike Awesome. In response, Steiner threatened to beat up Terry Taylor, who responded saying he'd sue if Steiner touched him, and Steiner cursed him out and called him a bunch of names for threatening to sue. This isn't the first time Steiner has had a temper tantrum at management backstage and even on TV awhile back, he cut an unscripted promo on TV against Ric Flair that led to him being suspended. Dave thinks this sort of behavior will continue as long as WCW refuses to grow a spine and actually punish wrestlers for unprofessional behavior. Dave also makes a not so subtle reference to 'roid rage and points out the obvious steroid issues still prevalent in WCW. Anyway, Steiner was pulled from the Thunder tapings but he's still scheduled to work the PPV and Dave says that's surely going to send a strong message about what happens when you threaten to beat up your boss. Steiner isn't the only person making waves lately. Kevin Nash also got into a bit of a verbal spat with Terry Taylor (who has been booking the shows in Russo's absence) and Nash allegedly said "If you're so smart, how come you never drew a dime. And finally, Goldberg has been unhappy about his heel turn and is said to have a pretty short fuse lately also, and has been heavily pushing them to turn him back babyface. The Great American Bash did a 0. 19 buyrate. Just a reminder, that PPV featured both Hogan and Flair in loser-must-retire matches, plus a heavily hyped announcement that was supposed to "change the face of the wrestling industry" ended up being Goldberg's heel turn. And they got about the same number of viewers as a poorly-lit low rated ECW TV episode. They've been doing an angle for weeks where Kevin Nash is trying to bring Scott Hall back. Goldberg is facing Nash at the PPV and if Nash wins, Hall returns. One big problem though: WCW head honcho Brad Siegel has made it clear that he doesn't want Scott Hall back. Of course, the issues all stem from Hall's behavior and the last straw was several months ago in England when Hall was so trashed that he wasn't even allowed on the plane to fly back to the U. S. with the rest of the crew, which caused him to miss the go-home Nitro for a PPV he was main eventing. He got back the next day but threatened JJ Dillon over something and ended up being pulled from Thunder that week also. He did show up and main event the PPV but he suffered a legit neck injury in that match. Hall was expected to be fired after that PPV but the neck injury and subsequent surgery basically saved his job and he's been sitting at home earning 16, 000 a week while he recovers. There was a lot of talk that Hall faked the injury to save his job, and in any other case, Dave wouldn't be surprised. But Hall legitimately had neck surgery for the injury, so it's pretty unlikely that he faked it. There's an added wrinkle to this because Hall was dating Brad Siegel's neice Emily Sherman and they had a very stormy relationship and apparently had a big public altercation with each other during the England trip. Anyway, considering they've already started the angle on TV to bring him back without ever consulting the head of the company to see if he would even allow him to come back, Dave says WCW is even more incompetent than he previously thought (indeed they were. Siegel sticks to his guns. Hall never comes back, thus rendering this storyline meaningless. But don't worry: the saga of Kevin Nash going into business for himself in order to get Hall re-hired is just beginning. Various WCW notes: Curt Hennig's contract has expired, no word on his future. Rey Mysterio's knee is in bad shape yet again because WCW keeps putting him in the ring before he's healed and he keeps doing more than he should. There's talk of making Stevie Ray a commentator. Ric Flair is hoping to be back in the ring by September after undergoing shoulder surgery. Chris Candido is apparently done in WCW. He suffered a broken wrist a few weeks ago and Bischoff was said to be unhappy about it since they just reformed the Triple Threat group with Candido, Douglas, and Bigelow and then a week later, Candido showed up injured. Bischoff also was unhappy with Bigelow, feeling he's out of shape. Candido is still under contract until September and hasn't been released but they aren't planning to use him anymore. Shane Douglas is dealing with a neck injury but no one knows how bad because he refuses to seek treatment. He was injured on Thunder initially and then 6 days later again on Nitro and was clearly shaken up and unable to lift up his opponents to do his moves. But when told to get checked out, he's been insisting that he's fine. Dave says that's the attitude of a lot of people in WCW now because the company has started cutting people's paychecks in half when they're out injured, so no one wants to take time off. Dave takes a look at WCW's money losses. After 27 years on the air, WCW Saturday Night has pretty much been cancelled. It was renamed WCW Saturday Morning and moved to a morning time slot and it's just a recap show nowadays. But Dave notes that the ratings difference amounts to about a 64% drop in ad revenue from what the show was doing in the evening time slot. And of course, Nitro has theoretically suffered a 42% drop so far this year due to cutting the show from 3 hours to 2 but in reality, production costs have gone up significantly so odds are they have lost even more money than that. Dave says the cutback to 2 hours was probably a necessity, for the sanity of everyone working there if nothing else, but it was a major factor in WCW's staggering losses so far this year. Plus, the idea of cutting back to 2 hours is that it would improve the ratings, which it should have and did in the short-term, but now they're back down to lower than ever. Not to mention PPV buyrates are in the toilet, no one goes to WCW house shows anymore, and merch sales are basically flatlined. TL;DR - WCW is still hemorraging money. Hulk Hogan tried to lend his name to a political endorsement but it backfired. An ad aired on TV and had Hogan telling voters in Clearwater, FL to vote for a 300 million downtown revitalization project that they claim will create 2, 000 jobs. In the commercial, Hogan claimed he and his family had lived in Clearwater for 12 years and said he was going to vote for the bill. Turns out Hogan doesn't actually live in Clearwater (although he is close to it) and isn't a registered voter there. The sponsors behind the ad called it a mistake and have since pulled the ad from TV. Vampiro is apparently recording an album with ICP. According to Violent J, the band's label Psychopathic Records plans to release a Vampiro album later this year called Thrillkill, and Vampiro will go on tour with ICP around then as well. ICP is also hoping to get back into WCW because they love doing pro wrestling and neither WWF or ECW will bring them back (Vampiro album never happens. He eventually goes on tour with them for a few shows but it's right after he suffers a concussion and he ends up leaving the tour because the loud music was too painful. Roddy Piper is still under WCW contract but there's no plans to bring him back to TV right now. But he's still contracted for several more PPV matches so it's bound to happen eventually (nah, WCW goes out of business before then, but I think Piper ends up suing them over not honoring the contract. The New York Times ran a story about the WWF's victory in the lawsuit with USA. In the article, USA president Stephen Chao tried to downplay the loss, saying it would have a negligible effect on the network's ratings (which Dave says is a pretty stupid comment given how WWF is by far the highest rated product on USA) and basically acted like they didn't care. If USA wasn't that concerned about WWF leaving, they wouldn't have gone to such extreme legal lengths to try and stop it. Chao also claimed that it would have a positive effect on the network's profits because wrestling isn't as profitable to advertisers. But during the actual trial, USA execs testified that the WWF was highly profitable and touted Raw as the crown jewel of USA's schedule. So needless to say, they're trying to save face publicly but make no mistake, USA is taking a big hit by losing WWF. There's also concern about how WWF moving to TNN will affect Canada. Right now, WWF is broadcast on TSN in Canada because the USA Network isn't available there. But TNN is. The belief is that TSN is probably going to be screwed in the long-run because they often pre-empt Raw for other sports and also heavily censor it, neither of which WWF is happy about. They still have 3 years left on their deal with TSN but for now, it's going to air on both channels. TSN has talked about picking up Nitro if they end up losing WWF. WWF's after-tax profit for the first quarter of 2000 was 12, 773, 000 which is slightly down from last years first quarter profits. The reason is that WWF had lower expenses last year and this year they have already spent some money on legal fees and XFL start-up costs. Chris Benoit, Chris Jericho, and Kurt Angle are all going to be in high profile matches on the upcoming Fully Loaded PPV, with Benoit main eventing against the Rock for the WWF title, Jericho against Triple H, and Angle against Undertaker. There's a lot of pressure for this show to do a good buyrate because if it doesn't, those 3 guys are going to be blamed. Dave seems to think it's a little unfair that Benoit and Jericho just got eliminated in the first round of last month's King of the Ring PPV and haven't had any major wins on TV and now they're expected to draw a big PPV buyrate in main event spots. That's practically being set up to fail. Notes from Raw: Dave thinks was the funniest wrestling show he's seen in forever and says whoever came up with the Mick Foley segments deserves a raise and that Foley should be working in sitcoms. The wrestling was really good too. Basically, WWF is still kicking ass right now while WCW is struggling to string together a single good segment on Nitro. Also, Stevie Richards is now Steven and is doing a censorship gimmick where he runs out and covers up half naked women and things like that, which is a riff on the whole PTC thing. Various WWF notes: when it moves to MTV, Sunday Night Heat will likely feature less first-run wrestling matches and become more of a recap show with more music included. Bob Holly had surgery on a broken arm stemming from Kurt Angle landing badly on him doing a moonsault. Holly ended up needing plates and screws put into his arm and will be out for about 3 months. Tori has a separated shoulder and may need surgery also. Dean Malenko is working with a shoulder injury. Kurt Angle's 1996 Olympic victory celebration is being shown in NBC commercials for the upcoming 2000 Olympics. Big Show should be back on TV soon. Perry Saturn is dealing with a lot of back problems but is working through them. WWF has had talks with Kurt Angle's brother Eric Angle but he hasn't been signed as of yet. And on eBay this week, someone is auctioning off photos that he took live in the arena of Owen Hart's death. It was made clear to Raven during meetings that he is being brought in to the WWF on probation. He's getting a relatively low downside guarantee compared to most contracts and has been told that he has to prove he's moved past all his known issues and that he's basically coming in with a zero tolerance policy. So if he screws up, he's gone, but if he doesn't, he'll be given a fair chance just like everyone else. A lot of guys who worked with him in WCW and ECW went to bat for him to help get him hired. Just to show you how much things have changed in the business, The Rock is now a 5-time WWF champion in less than two years, which already ties him with Hulk Hogan and Bret Hart for most all time. Triple H is a 4-time champion in an even shorter period of time. Basically, world titles are passed around like hot potatoes nowadays. Letters section this week. One guy writes in ranting about Vince Russo, blaming him for booking the match that led Terry Funk and Chris Candido into a position where they could have been killed by a horse on live TV and says clearly Russo has learned nothing from the dangerous stunt booking that led to Owen Hart's death. He also argues that Russo is racist for his comments about Japanese and Mexican wrestlers, comparing it to the statements Bill Watts made that got him fired from WCW back in 1993. Someone else writes in, criticizing Jim Cornette for kissing Vince McMahon's ass during a recent interview. In fact, this is the guy who interviewed him. Cornette spent the interview trashing Vince Russo (whaaaa? No way, that doesn't sound like the Cornette I know) and portraying McMahon and the WWF as ethical and honest. He says when he pushed Cornette on the way Vince gobbled up the territories, Cornette claimed that Vince never stole away anyone's stars without letting the promoter know first, which is obviously bullshit. When he challenged Cornette on the way McMahon handled Owen Hart's death ( they pried Owen's dead body off the canvas without hesitation and continued on with the PPV. Cornette said that was distasteful. The guy writing the letter says that the only thing distasteful is the way WWF handled that situation. Cornette complained that WCW and Vince Russo had ruined the integrity of wrestling while ignoring what WWF has turned pro wrestling into. And on and on and on. Basically, he says Cornette is right when he talks about how awful Vince Russo is but he says Cornette has blinders on when it comes to Vince McMahon. It's a long letter and the guy makes a lot of good points, but hey, Cornette was still on the WWF payroll at the time so, ya know. What'd he expect him to do, badmouth his boss in an interview? NFL reporter (and, in 2018, SiriusXM radio host) Alex Marvez writes in with a brief letter to address something Dave wrote recently about steroids in the NFL as compared to wrestling. Marvez says that he's never seen rampant steroid abuse in the NFL or even minimal steroid abuse, and feels that the NFL's current testing process is effective. And finally, comedy writer and Observer reader Desmond Devlin writes in with another long and hilarious letter that is once again worth reading in full: Please, my tortured mind is whirling and only you can save me. Please answer my questions. Is pro wrestling really a good match for The Nashville Network? I mean, when you think about all that drinkin' and shootin' and car crashin' and incest and broken marriages, the WWF could end up being a really bad influence on country music. Do you think Saddam Hussein's troops in the last war appreciated that they were "getting the rub" from the U. Army? Looking back, don't you agree that Sid Vicious' consecutive win streak was underrated? Personally I thought it was the greatest sports accomplishment since Joe DiMaggio hit in 2, 814 straight games. The fact that this is based off of a true story makes it all the more emotionally impactful. All of the performances in this movie did the real life people this was based off of justice. Paul Walter Hauser was stunningly brilliant as Richard Jewell and elicited about as much sympathy as someone can on the big screen. Kathy Bates also delivered in spades as the emotional mother having to watch her son be wrongly accused by the United States government and the media. It's not often you have three stand out performances in one movie, but Sam Rockwell deserves some recognition too for the great work he did as Richard Jewell's lawyer and close friend. This was a story that holds a heavy message for this day and time, and Clint Eastwood portrays it in a way that is sure to stick with the viewers for a long time.
